Eleven years after terrorists attacked the World Trade Center, the new multibillion-dollar World Trade Center once again dominates the lower Manhattan skyline. Hundreds of construction workers are at the 16-acre site every day, and tourists snap thousands of photos of the two towers that are nearing completion.

The status of the trade center’s major components, according to developers:

— Most of the 8-acre memorial quadrangle at the World Trade Center opened last year on the 10th anniversary of the attacks. Since then, 4.5 million people have visited the memorial, with its twin reflecting pools where the towers stood. But a museum being built in a cavern beneath the plaza is still incomplete. Work all but stopped last fall because of a funding dispute between the memorial foundation and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, but on Monday the two parties announced an agreement that will pave the way for its eventual completion. Joseph Daniels, president of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, said that once construction resumes it will take more than a year to finish the job, meaning the museum might not open until 2014.

— One World Trade Center, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, will open in 2014 on the northwest corner of the trade center site with 3 million square feet of office space. Tenants so far include magazine publisher Conde Nast and the federal government’s General Services Administration. The spire atop the 104-story building will reach the symbolic height of 1,776 feet. There will be observation decks on the 100th, 101st and 102nd floors. The building without the spire has reached its full height of 1,368 feet. It is expected to cost $3.9 billion by the time it is finished.

Obama is wrong on Civilian Terrorist Trials…….

The Dog doesn’t usually come out this direct and strong on a issue…but after long and hot discussions with my spouse I have to say she’s right….

The President is wrong on this issue……

From the start the issue was a appeasement to our European friends who came to see the Guantanamo Bay detention center as a bad thing (earlier interrogation abuses )……

But President Obama ……is the American president, and most American’s are fine….. it turns out with the bad guys remaining right where they are…on the Island of Cuba…..

This is a battle that is unneccessary, and just plain dumb…..

Trying terrorists in civilian courts make no sense…..

My wife railed on about the Miranda thing…I calmly reminded her that despite the yelling from the right …anything the FBI got from Uma Farouk Abdulmutallab on the NW235 flight BEFORE he was Mirandized (it turns out after 9 Hours of questioning) could not be used in a Federal Court….The case is good enough for the FBI to give to Justice to try….. without the kids statements ……...but the law is the law…..

……and there will be a settlement here since he’s singing like a bird…he is only a 20 something year old kid who’s going to jail for along…long…long time……..but the law is the law…..

But why even go thru this?

The actions on that flight where not criminal……Criminal’s want money……or……If they want to hurt someone….they want to hurt them and walk away…

This guy tried to blow up* an Airplane with him in it…….He didn’t think he was going to walk away…

The Dog feels that the Congress should move ahead with denying the President money to try any of these people in civilian courts..and that the only place they should be….. is tucked away in the Gitmo facility….

Here’s an interesting piece on the subject…….

*Note.…. From what the Dog has read…It appears that Abdulmutallab  did not have the ability to set off his explosives…..while the all the reports list PETN as the explosive that he was wired with..all the open source information suggests that a simple fire could not set the explosives off……only  detination caps…..Thank Goodness.

More on the 'Special Interrogation Teams'……

The Dog has followed this story for a while……

Here…. Here……...and Here…….

It seems that after the NW 235 caper..the government decided to actually set the unit up…..it still isn’t fully operational……

The High-Value Detainee Interrogation Group, announced to fanfare by White House officials last summer, was not formally authorized until Jan. 28, under a previously unreported 14-page memo signed by the president’s national security adviser, Gen. James L. Jones. The delay became a matter of political debate last month after members of Congress asked why the group had been not deployed to interrogate Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who is accused of trying to detonate an explosive Dec. 25 on an airliner about to land in Detroit.

But the Dogs still see’s this whole thing as a political exercise (the finding wasn’t signed until January 28th? ) to placate those who think that bad guys need to be protected from the local FBI and CIA people and counterintelligence people at those agencies….Who have so far handled the NW suspect case pretty darn good…..

Duplication of services come to mind……

Wasting the taxpayer’s money does also……

Bureaucratic political infighting seems to be also on the list…….

Note:…..Even the name of the Group sounds lousy……One can only hope this whole thing quietly goes away…..I can see the cluster f*#k at an airport if a similar action occurs…..What are the local FBI agents and Cops supposed to do?….Sit there with their mouths taped shut  for hours until the HVDIG people show up?……

Note#2.….The Republican’s are on crack…no Federal Judge  and Defense attorney is gonna let any testimony from a suspect gained BEFORE being Mirandized be used in a trial…Nope… ain’t gonna happen……That’s why Abdulmutallad is singing…he knows he’s getting a deal…..intelligence will always trump a criminal charge….

Will the Gitmo Five be tried in NYC…or not?……

For the past few days the media has proclaimed that the trials will be moved from the Federal CourtHouse in downtown New York City….This possoble move….as everything since the ‘Scott Brown effectr’ kicked in may have a political side to it……

The Hill…the Paper and website has a piece out today saying the White House STILL wants the trial held in New York…..

If one goes back and carefully checks all the media stories one will find that the United States Department of Justice has not indicated in any way shape or form the trial will actually be moved……

You will see all sorts of quotes…from unnamed sources….but no…..”we will move the trial”….from anyone…..

And I think that’s because the political thing has kicked in at the White House…not Justice……someone in one the meetings on this ….has pushed back and surely said…..’the Mayor of the City of New York doesn’t tell the Federal Government what to do…and when…’

and of course…that’s correct…..and judging by the two links I’ve provided in this piece…..the feelings are divided……

Sure businesses are going to lose money…and downtown New York is gonna be locked down…..but alot of people also want the trials to go on…in the City so that they can see the results ……

My guess is they will probably go somewhere else…..

But you never know…..

The political side might just say…..We’re the government and WE decide where we do this…….

Politics vs Reality on the closing of Gitmo……and Change….

President Obama made a political promise to the World and others about closing the Guantanamo Bay Detainee Facility…

He did that because of the bad press that place had when he was running for the Presidency…..

I put the World first in the promise sentence because that where it belongs……Most American’s…. Really would be happy for the bad guys to stay on Castro’s Cuban mainland.….

The ‘Scott Brown effect ‘has forced Obama, and his White House to look inward, at the country’s ill’s, instead of trying to make the world happy…..Gitmo is another example of the same problem…..Now that New York City is having second thought about hosting the terror trial..the cats sorta out of the bag…...I expect Gitmo to house bad guys fro a long time...

Like Bill Clinton…..Barack Obama campaigned on shaking things up…Change…..

Turns out people…and certainly opposition parties….. Don’t really like too much change.….

Just as Bill Clinton ran into a brick wall in his first year as President…Barrack Obama has hit his…….

The Dog posted here that Scott Brown’s election in a local sense was just about a better, smarted more down to earth guy …beating a smug, bad , absent tee campaigner…..and that’s all it was really…..But the media, talking heads, and voters kinda sent another message……Tired of a President that was out of the country too much…and didn’t seem top understand that the while the economy TECHNICALLY was getting better…things on the ground still hurting……

I have watched with fascination as several White House initiatives have unravelled in the last week……Healthcare, NY Terror trial, Other Congressional legislation and wonder what Obama is saying to Bill Clinton when they talk…And you know they do..because history IS repeating itself right in front of our eyes…….

Bloomberg gets 'cold feet'…….Maybe the terror trials shouldn't be in New York?

Wow!….who could have seen this coming?……

Right after he asks the fed’s for $75 million to host the trials in downtown Manhattan….The New York City Mayor  (a closet Republican) changes his mind and muses out load maybe the trials shouldn’t be in the City after all…...What’s with this?

Is this politics.?……or does he just want to keep the money and tell the Fed’s to go scratch?

The Obama administration on Wednesday lost its most prominent backer of the plan to try the self-described mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks in Lower Manhattan when Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said the trial should not be held in New York City.

The mayor’s reversal was a political blow to the White House’s efforts to resolve a landmark terror case a few blocks from where Al Qaeda hijackers rammed planes into the World Trade Center, a trial that the president saw as an important demonstration of American justice.

Mr. Bloomberg said that a more secure location, like a military base, would be less disruptive and less costly. His remarks echoed growing opposition from Wall Street executives, the real estate industry and neighborhood groups, who have questioned the burdens that such a trial would bring to a heavily trafficked area of the city.

“It’s going to cost an awful lot of money and disturb an awful lot of people,” Mr. Bloomberg said at a news conference in Brooklyn. “My hope is that the attorney general and the president decide to change their mind.“

Or…could it be this?…….

Mr. Bloomberg had steadfastly supported the location of the trial. When the news broke two months ago, he declared, “It is fitting that 9/11 suspects face justice near the World Trade Center site, where so many New Yorkers were murdered.”

But over the past few weeks, he has heard from scores of business and community leaders who urged him to reverse course. Real estate brokers argued that security restrictions would dampen the market for apartments in Chinatown and TriBeCa; small-business owners feared a severe drop-off in customers; and residents worried that they would be unable to use their local streets.

The Police Department has said that in preparation for the trial, the area around the courthouse would be flooded with uniformed police officers, in cars and on horseback, and surrounded by 2,000 interlocking metal barriers.

“I believe it would destroy the economy in Lower Manhattan,” said Steve Spinola, president of the Real Estate Board of New York, which represents property owners. He has urged the mayor’s office to speak out against holding the trial in the city.

The city estimated it would spend more than $200 million a year on security for the trial, making it one of the most expensive security operations it would ever take on.

City Hall aides said that the complex trial could drag on for years, eventually costing the city close to $1 billion in the middle of a deep recession, though most of that is expected to be shouldered by the federal government.

Raymond W. Kelly, the city’s police commissioner, while publicly supporting the mayor’s earlier position, has also expressed alarm over the impact of the trial on the Police Department, which has shrunk significantly since Mr. Bloomberg took office in 2002. Providing security for the court case, he has told city officials, would “suck the oxygen” from the department and leave it little flexibility to pursue new initiatives, according to people told of the conversations.

On Wednesday, Mr. Bloomberg said the city could ultimately handle hosting the trial, but said it would be better if it were held outside the city.

“Can we provide security? Yes. Could you provide security elsewhere? Yeah,” he said. “The suggestion of a military base is probably a reasonably good one.”

Mr. Bloomberg added, with a hint of sarcasm, “It would be great if the federal government could find a site that didn’t cost a billion dollars, which using downtown will.”

The Dog says…….Hummmmm?

President Obama has not changed his view on whether the self-described mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks should face trial in New York City, a White House spokesman said today, despite fresh criticism from Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg that the proceedings should be moved from Manhattan.

“The president is committed to seeing that he’s brought to justice. He agrees with the attorney general’s opinion in November that he and others can be litigated successfully and secured in the United States of America,” Mr. Burton said. “Currently our federal jails hold hundreds of convicted terrorists and the president’s opinion has not changed on that.”

Common sense prevails….Justice Dept. advises the President to forget the politics of the issue…some Gitmo people can never be tried or go home…..

I am glad to see this story…while the thought of holding people indefinitely…..without trial doesn’t seem right (and will bother a great many people here, and abroad )….the reality of the world these days, dictates that the Justice Task Force’s recommendations make sense……

A Justice Department-led task force has concluded that nearly 50 of the 196 detainees at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, should be held indefinitely without trial under the laws of war, according to Obama administration officials.

The task force’s findings represent the first time that the administration has clarified how many detainees it considers too dangerous to release but unprosecutable because officials fear trials could compromise intelligence-gathering and because detainees could challenge evidence obtained through coercion.

While this is not where we might want to be….this country is in reality there already……

Human rights advocates have bemoaned the administration’s failure to fulfill President Obama‘s promise last January to close the Guantanamo Bay facility within a year as well as its reliance on indefinite detention, a mechanism devised during George W. Bush‘s administration that they deem unconstitutional.

The issue is very difficult…while the administration wants to certainly get rid of the problem…it faces problems at home on closing Gitmo…a big campaign promise Obama made…. Which is dear to the public abroad…..

Moving a significant number of detainees to the United States remains key to the administration’s now-delayed plan to empty the military facility. The federal government plans to acquire a state prison in Thomson, Ill., to house Guantanamo Bay detainees, but the plan faces major hurdles.

Congress has barred the transfer of the detainees to the United States except for prosecution. And a coalition of Republicans opposed to any transfers and some Democrats critical of detention without trial could derail the possibility of using the Thomson facility for anything other than military commissions, according to congressional staffers.

The task force comprised officials from the departments of Defense, State, Homeland Security and Justice, as well as agencies such as the CIA and the FBI. Officials said that the process of assessing the detainees was extremely challenging and occasionally contentious, but that consensus was reached on each case in the end.

Some European officials, who would like to see Guantanamo Bay closed without instituting indefinite detention, are advocating the creation of an internationally funded rehabilitation center for terrorism suspects in Yemen and possibly Afghanistan. They say such a facility would gradually allow the transfer of all detainees from those countries back to their homelands, according to two sources…….

The timetable Obama gave a year ago is already past…..It will be forgotten…it was political in nature anyways……the solution for the detainees will involve a lot of work by a lot of people and its anyones guess what the final solution will be….

One must also be mindful of the political consequences of a major terrorist act, committed by someone the United States had in custody, that was found out, to have been released…..that is the stuff that can ruin a politicians political life for ever…..and get people killed……

Defense Secretary Gates tells his troops…'back to uniforms' in the Pentagon…

Since 9/11 most of the officers working in the Pentagon have had the option of wearing BDU’s…or Battle Dress Uniforms to work……the BDU’s or combat fatigues’,  are the work uniforms of the military…..camofluge pants, shirts and informal hats…….

But with move into the new year….. the ‘Boss’…Secretary Gates, has let it be know that he would prefer his troops in uniforms….. And so it shall be……

The only service that won’t have to change will be the Navy……The never went to BDU’s……

The NYPD and FDNY rescue teams are being deployed to Haiti…..

They got their activation last night…….Hopfully there will be poeple still alive under the rubble, four or five days since the incident occured…..

From the piece….

The phone rang at 2 a.m. Police Officer Scott Mateyaschuk of the K-9 unit knew before he answered that the order had finally come.

He and 79 others members of the New York City Urban Search and Rescue Task Force would be heading down to Haiti.

K-9 unit cops live with their dogs, and Mateyaschuk’s 85-pound German shepherd, Aragon, also had been roused by the ringing phone.

“He knew something was up,” Mateyaschuk later said. “He was ready.”

I gotta admit he has balls….John Yoo on the John Stewart Show…..

John Yoo, The former Department of Justice lawyer…. and the guy who wrote the torture memo….. that President Bush used to justify his interrogation policy actions…..is interviewed on John Stewarts show…..the guy is selling a book and I give him credit fro going into the lion’s den……

Most of the show is serious actually……..

And Yoo is actually a smart guy…..and a Law professor at U.C Berkley in California……

In the interview…he tries to get across that he never met President Bush and he was just the vessel…..who wrote the briefs for the time of war he was in at that moment….

U.S. Passengers favor body scans…by miles over 'pat downs'……

While the media highlights concerns about body scan airport screening….an USA Today/Gallop Poll indicates that the traveling public really doesn ‘t mind the the units and prefer them over ‘pat downs’ by 70%……

I guess the machine is much more preferable than having someone run their hands all over your body…in public……
