Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton appointed his lieutenant governor, Tina Smith, to replace resigning Sen. Al Franken in the Senate at a press conference Wednesday morning.

Smith was Dayton’s chief of staff during his first term in office and served as his running mate in 2014. She worked in marketing for General Mills as a vice president for a regional branch of Planned Parenthood before serving as chief of staff to then-Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, after which she went to work for Dayton.

“She genuinely likes people, and people like her,” Dayton said in making the appointment. “She has impeccable integrity and the highest personal and professional standards.”

Dayton’s appointment of Smith will hand Franken’s seat to a female Democrat after Franken, who was in the middle of his second term, decided to resign under pressure after multiple women accused him of groping and sexual harassment. More than half of Senate Democrats called for Franken’s resignation last week after another accuser stepped forward….

Al Franken ain’t REALLY sorry with stepping down…

I don’t blame the guy for feeling that his party threw HIM undet the bus….

That against the feeling that Republicans aren’t doing the same for their people in the same situation…

Said Franken:
“I am leaving while a man who has bragged on tape about his history of sexual assault sits in the Oval Office and a man who repeatedly preyed on young girls campaigns for the Senate with the full support of his party. But this decision is not about me. It’s about the people of Minnesota.”
The message of all this is clear as day: I didn’t do anything really wrong. The people who say I did are wrong or don’t remember it right. And it’s ridiculous that people like Trump and Moore are in the White House and might be in the Senate, respectively, while I am being forced out.
Franken got support in that view from an unlikely source on Thursday: Former Bush White House press secretary Ari Fleischer. “Franken should not have resigned. His fate should have been left 2 the people of MN. Moore, who had sexual contact w a 14-yr old, should drop out. Conyers, who hit on his employees, should have resigned. Franken is a creep who acted inappropriatly, but his facts are different,” tweeted Fleischer shortly after Franken’s resignation announcement.
The second part of Franken’s conclusion will have a lot of Democratic heads nodding. Why is Franken resigning for allegations of groping and unwanted kissing while Trump is in office after more than a dozen women accused him during the campaign of sexual harassment? Why is Franken resigning when Roy Moore, who faces multiple allegations of pursuing relationships with teenagers as young as 14 when he was in his 30s, is looking more and more like a winner in next Tuesday’s special election?
Those are fair questions. The simple reason is because Franken gave in to the pressure to step aside while Trump and Moore just kept saying they didn’t do anything wrong and had no plans to leave their respective races. And the political willpower didn’t exist in Alabama or the country to get rid of them…..

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton is expected to appoint his lieutenant governor and close ally, Tina Smith, to Al Franken’s seat if the Democratic senator resigns on Thursday, three people familiar with the Democratic governor’s thinking said.

But that appointment would be just the start of an upheaval in Minnesota. Part of the reason Smith could be heading to the Senate, the sources said, is that she has indicated no interest in running for Congress in the past and would not run for the remainder of Franken’s term, which expires in 2020, in a 2018 special election. That would clear the way for a wide open Democratic primary next year if Franken steps down….

Democartic US Senator’s ask Franken to resign….Update..He’s stepping down

I have said all along that Franken should step aside after Trump and Moore do….They have done thing more serious…

But it appears that some of his colleagues aren’t in agreement with this….

And are giving cover fire to the Republicans…

Seven female senators on Wednesday called on Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) to resign in the wake of multiple sexual misconduct allegations against him.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand was the first of Franken’s fellow Senate Democrats to take that step and was quickly followed by Democratic Sens. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, Claire McCaskill of Missouri, Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, Patty Murray of Washington, Kamala Harris of California and Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin. Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) also called on Franken to resign.

“While Senator Franken is entitled to have the Ethics Committee conclude its review, I believe it would be better for our country if he sent a clear message that any kind of mistreatment of women in our society isn’t acceptable by stepping aside to let someone else serve,” Gillibrand said in a Facebook post.

The calls came after POLITICO reportedthat a former Democratic congressional aide said he tried to forcibly kiss her after a taping of his radio show in 2006, three years before he became a U.S. senator. Franken, who had previously been accused by six other women of groping or trying to forcibly kiss them, denied the accusation….
