Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton appointed his lieutenant governor, Tina Smith, to replace resigning Sen. Al Franken in the Senate at a press conference Wednesday morning.

Smith was Dayton’s chief of staff during his first term in office and served as his running mate in 2014. She worked in marketing for General Mills as a vice president for a regional branch of Planned Parenthood before serving as chief of staff to then-Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, after which she went to work for Dayton.

“She genuinely likes people, and people like her,” Dayton said in making the appointment. “She has impeccable integrity and the highest personal and professional standards.”

Dayton’s appointment of Smith will hand Franken’s seat to a female Democrat after Franken, who was in the middle of his second term, decided to resign under pressure after multiple women accused him of groping and sexual harassment. More than half of Senate Democrats called for Franken’s resignation last week after another accuser stepped forward….

If Sen Franken steps down…. who gets the US Senate seat?

We don’t know if he will resign in the face of the media onslaught related to sexual harrasment  allegations that keep coming out against him….

But if he decides to step down?

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton is expected to appoint his lieutenant governor and close ally, Tina Smith, to Al Franken’s seat if the Democratic senator resigns on Thursday, three people familiar with the Democratic governor’s thinking said.

But that appointment would be just the start of an upheaval in Minnesota. Part of the reason Smith could be heading to the Senate, the sources said, is that she has indicated no interest in running for Congress in the past and would not run for the remainder of Franken’s term, which expires in 2020, in a 2018 special election. That would clear the way for a wide open Democratic primary next year if Franken steps down….
