The Email story done Hillary Clinton in?

Matthew Yglesias@ Vox sits down and writes a piece on how a email server set up by the Clinton’s before Hillary Clinton actually became Sec of State and how the contents of that private server became a whipping cane for Republicans and the MEDIA…..

I will add that the Hillary Clinton’s reaction to the situation , by ‘ calming up’ did her NO favors and actually made the email story bigger and more posienous against  her chance to be come the first American Woman President….

Historians will write of a growing trend toward partisan polarization and a brewing sense of political crisis dating back to Bill Clinton’s impeachment in 1998. They’ll note the projected end of America’s white majority, the geopolitical revolution induced by Russia’s reinvention of itself as an international beacon of cultural conservatism, and the corrosive effect of the 2007-2008 financial crisis. The “failures of neoliberalism” will come in for scrutiny.

All true and all important. But my message to the future is this. No matter how stupid it sounds, and no matter how much political and journalistic elites on all sides of America’s toxic politics began trying to ignore it as soon as the votes were counted, the dominant issue of the 2016 campaign was email server management….

Bill Clinton found himself in the unusual employment circumstances of being an ex-president in 2001, he hired someone to set up a private server for himself and his wife and her personal email was hosted on that server.

At the time Clinton became secretary of state, she was a heavy user of a once-popular early smartphone line called Blackberry.

The state of federal government information technology infrastructure, at the time, was such that a work-issued email address could only be associated with a work-issued Blackberry and the work-issued Blackberry could not be connected to a personal email address. Many federal workers at the time handled this by carrying around two smartphones, which was an annoying but workable solution. Clinton, as the boss, chose to spare herself the inconvenience involved by simply ignoring State Department guidelines and using her own phone and her personal email address….

FBI Director James Comey told the American people that “no reasonable prosecutor” would bring a case against Clinton…

Email fever reached its peak on two separate major occasions. One was when Comey closed the investigation. Instead of simply saying “we looked into it and there was no crime,” Comey sought to immunize himself from Clinton critics by breaking with standard procedure to offer extended negative commentary on Clinton’s behavior. He said she was “extremely careless.”

Comey then brought the email story back to the center of the campaign in late October by writing a letter to Congress indicating that the email case had been reopened due to new discoveries on Anthony Weiner’s laptop. It turned out that the new discoveries were an awfully flimsy basis for a subpoena, and the subpoena turned up nothing.

This all still sounds unimportant, but it was not at the time:

  • The New York Times dedicated 100 percent of its above-the-fold space to coverage of Comey’s letter to Congress.
  • Throughout the campaign season, network newscasts dedicated more time to Clinton’s email server stories than to stories about all policy issues combined.
  • Donald Trump’s campaign rallies featured regular “lock her up” chants, centering the email server as the opposition’s main criticism of Clinton.
  • Across five television networks and six major newspapers, 11 percent of campaign coverage was stories about Clinton’s email server.
  • Critically, one useful function of email-based criticism of Hillary Clinton was to pull together the Trumpian and establishment wings of the Republican Party. That’s why it served as the central theme of the 2016 Republican Convention, allowing the likes of Scott Walker and Rick Perry to deliver on-message speeches rather than clashing with Trump’s message…

Some GOPer’s want to keep doing a Hillary Clinton political beatdown…

Annoyed that there is a recount in the making…..

They want to CONTINUE their efforts to hurt Clinton…..

Such efforts actually helped her husband decades ago….

Hillary Clinton’s biggest adversaries are continuing their pursuit of the Democratic presidential nominee, even after her defeat in the election.

President-elect Donald Trump has said that he does not plan to push a prosecution of Clinton, but others haven’t given up the chase.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) argues its his “duty” to see his panel’s investigations through to their conclusion.
“A political election does not extinguish the need for transparency, truth and justice,” he told Fox News this week.

The conservative watchdog Judicial Watch, a longtime Clinton foe, is also promising to continue its work.

It has a swath of ongoing open records cases against the State Department over emails sent on Clinton’s personal email server during her tenure at Foggy Bottom.

Judicial Watch has repeatedly sought to depose Clinton herself and, in one case, is seeking the release of the thousands of emails found on disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner’s laptop found to be relevant to the FBI’s original probe into Clinton’s server.

And Larry Klayman, another longtime anti-Clinton agitator who founded Judicial Watch and now presides over Freedom Watch, has brought a wrongful death suit against Clinton on behalf of the parents of two men killed during the 2012 attacks on the American outpost in Benghazi, Libya.

“Somebody’s gotta do it to make the point,” Klayman said.

“She’s not going away, and these recounts will tell you that,” he added, referring to vote recounts in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania that were spearheaded by the Green Party…..

FBI Director Comey says review of Abedin/Weiner computer has found No problem for Clinton ..

The FBI director has sent a second letter to Congress nine days after he sent a first letter saying they where reviewing emails on Huma Abedin’s laptop shared withy her estarnged husband Anthony Weiner….

Today’s letter said that the FBI has reviewed ALL of the emails in the Abedin/Weiner computer that involved Hillary Clinton and there is NO issue with the emails….

This will absolve Abedin and Clinton ….

Republicans will somehow figure out a way to make this something it isn’t….

FBI Director and Atty Gen Loretta Lynch have had a rough nine days…..

The letter said that agents “have been working around the clock to process and review” the emails, which had been found on a computer owned by former Rep. Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of Clinton’s close aide Huma Abedin.

“During that process, we have reviewed all of the communications that were to or from Hillary Clinton while she was secretary of State,” Comey wrote. “Based on our review, we have not changed our conclusions that we expressed in July with respect to Secretary Clinton.”

In July, Comey sharply criticized Clinton for being “careless” in handling classified materials but said there was no basis for bringing any criminal charge against her.

Clinton’s campaign quickly expressed satisfaction with the announcement.

“We are glad this matter is resolved,” said the campaign’s communications director, Jennifer Palmieri….

FBI Director was warned his action was NOT according to regular DOJ policy…

…from the Washington Post….

Senior Justice Department officials warned the FBI that Director James B. Comey’s decision to notify Congress about renewing the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server was not consistent with long-standing practices of the department, according to officials familiar with the discussions.

Comey told Justice officials that he intended to inform lawmakers of newly discovered emails. These officials told him the department’s position “that we don’t comment on an ongoing investigation. And we don’t take steps that will be viewed as influencing an election,” said one Justice official who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the high-level conversations.

“Director Comey understood our position. He heard it from Justice leadership,” said the official. “It was conveyed to the FBI, and Comey made an independent decision to alert the Hill. He is operating independently of the Justice Department. And he knows it.”

Note …

It appears that Republican lead House hearings weighted heavily on the directors mind…..Comey DID admit that the newly found material is unkown in content…But Republicans and the Media have cast this in terms of Hillary Clinton instead of Comey’s worry about how the FBI would look if he followed regular procedure and examined the material first….

Atty Gen Lynch goes before the House on Clinton emails call…

FBI Director was called up before a US House committee to get questioned himself on his call that Hillary Clinton’s action did NOT meet the level to considered criminal…..

His boss, AG Loretta Lynch ,had tried to defer to Comey after a Bill Clinton social call that GOPer’s went batship crazy over…..

BUT….

Lynch in the end reversed herself and confirmed she would have the last say on the case and that she probably would back Comey and her staff’s call, which she has done….

GOPer’s on the House committe will try to get their pound of political blood from the Attorney Gnereal and will try to get her to go after Clinton AGAIN for ‘lying’ to Congress….

The recent Dallas police officer shootings will cut into the GOPer’s efforts to keep the spotlight on Clinton….

Attorney General Loretta Lynch likely faces questions about policing and race, as well as her department’s decision not to bring charges against Hillary Clinton over her use of private email while secretary of state, in a House hearing.

The House Judiciary Committee is likely to ask Tuesday about police interactions with minorities following a violent week that brought that issue to the forefront…..

FBI unlikely to charge Clinton on email use…

The email communication where used by members of the CIA , Defense, State Dept. and even the FBI’s parent agency the Justice Dept. . For time sensitive info sharing during holiday and weekend away from office time ‘s…..

Th info shared was widely available OUTSIDE the US at the time and was NOT labeled ‘secret ‘…..

The info sharing was wide spread at the time….

While the Media and Republican’s have been going back to the issue…

The Wall Street Journal is reporting the case is all but done….

The FBI will speak to Clinton during the summer and finish out the case….

One HAS to think that President Obama has been briefed in on this before endorsing Clinton for President…..

The still-secret emails are a key part of the FBI investigation that has long dogged Mrs. Clinton’s campaign, these officials said.

They were written within the often-narrow time frame in which State Department officials had to decide whether or not to object to drone strikes before the CIA pulled the trigger, the officials said.

Law-enforcement and intelligence officials said State Department deliberations about the covert CIA drone program should have been conducted over a more secure government computer system designed to handle classified information.

State Department officials told FBI investigators they communicated via the less-secure system on a few instances, according to congressional and law-enforcement officials. It happened when decisions about imminent strikes had to be relayed fast and the U.S. diplomats in Pakistan or Washington didn’t have ready access to a more-secure system, either because it was night or they were traveling…

Breaking…State Dept IG blames Clinton AND Other Sec’s of State for poor data Security…

The State Department’s Inspector General is out with a report that fault Clinton among OTHER Sec of State in their use of communications and data info….

The Republicans will focus on Clinton…..

The truth is the State Department ITSELF has failed to handle its secret communications needs….Several of the past Sec of State have admitted they did use unsecure means of communicatuions during their time at the agency, though none used   a private server , something Clinton has admitted was not smart….

This is about an agency….

Not politics…..

Clinton is singled out in the report that is based on interviews with current Secretary of State John Kerry and his predecessors – Madeleine Albright, Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice….The IG’s office did NOT speak with Clinton or any of her aides….

Clinton and her allies contend she did nothing illegal by choosing to set up a private email server and account at her Chappaqua, New York, home, and that she was not trying to evade public records requests. Instead, Clinton has said she was motivated by the desire for convenience, though she has conceded it was not the best choice.

The State Department has released roughly 30,000 emails Clinton turned over to her former agency at its request in December 2014. While there were no apparent bombshells in the content of the messages, more than 2,000 emails on her server were deemed classified after the fact, raising questions about the security and wisdom of the set-up….

Republicans in Congress back away from Clinton and her emails…

After her marathon last appearance before the House?

The whole email’s thing has dropped out of the political wars of 2016….

The emails have been retroactively classified…

The FBI has her server….

NOBODY is ACTUALLY accusing Hillary Clinton breaking any laws…

And tens of thousands of her emails have been released to a collective ‘ho-hum’….

The GOPer’s seem to aware that this has worn out its welcome…

Republicans are refusing to use the Benghazi playbook to go after Hillary Clinton’s private email server.

Instead of launching formal investigations or propping up a new special committee to investigate the emails — as they did with the 2012 Libya terror attack — House Republicans have gone out of their way to avoid formal inquiries into allegations that classified information was mishandled on Clinton’s personal machine.

“We have not had a pinpointed, targeted investigation of Hillary Clinton,” House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) told The Hill this week. “The FBI’s got the lead on this.”
Chaffetz’s comments came after The Hill and other media outlets reported on his committee’s investigation into federal recordkeeping, which is likely to touch on Clinton’s use of a “homebrew” email setup. But Chaffetz said that inquiry is only on the margins of the FBI’s investigation.

“Some of the reporting’s kind of been on the extremes on this,” Chaffetz said….

On the new Clinton email noise….

I’m not gonna get to much into the Clinton email server email thing….

The media is getting excited about it once again on the find that 22 emails in the server the State Dept. will NOT release to a FOIA request…

It appears AFTER A REVIEW?

Those email message WHERE THEN UPGRADED to ‘Top Secret’

The fine print?

When the messages went thru Clinton’s server..She didn’t send them…They where NOT CLASSIFIED.

The State Department acknowledged today that 22 messages stored on the private email server Hillary Clinton used when she was secretary of State contained top-secret information.

The issue reemerged as a liability for Clinton’s presidential campaign. She has long denied any of the messages that went through the unprotected server in her home held highly sensitive information. The State Department said none of the messages was marked top secret when sent…..

Federal Judge drops two lawsuits related to Hillary Clinton’s emails….

After the release of 55,000 pages of Clinton emails….With the last of the pile coming in a month or so…..

A Federal Judge has dismissed any further attempts to go after the Clinton private server the former Sec of State used while in office….

The email issue appears to have run its course for Conservative groups….

The judge noted that Clinton turned over approximately 55,000 pages of messages to the State Department at its request last December and that the agency took steps to secure electronic copies of the records. Those copies now appear to be in the possession of the FBI. State has asked the FBI to preserve those electronic files.

Those and other steps are good enough, the judge said.

“These are hardly the actions of a recalcitrant agency head or an uncooperative Archivist. Rather, they reflect a sustained effort on the part of State and NARA, after the agencies had learned of the potential removal of federal records from the government’s possession, to recover and preserve all of those records” Boasberg wrote. “Taken together, all of the recovery efforts initiated by both agencies up to the present day cannot in any way be described as a dereliction of duty. In light of this, Plaintiffs cannot establish an ongoing injury actionable under the [Federal Records Act]; as such, their cases are moot.”

Obama has Hillary’s back on the email’s….

Hillary Clinton’s former boss comes to her defense….

President Barack Obama says he did not have knowledge of the private email server Hillary Clinton used while serving as secretary of state, but he asserted that it did not pose a national security threat.

Speaking to Steve Kroft in an interview that aired on CBS’ “60 Minutes” on Sunday, Obama said that Clinton made a mistake that she acknowledged, adding that those in high-level government offices have to be careful to “stay as far away from the line as possible,” given the sensitive nature of such jobs.

“She made a mistake,” the president said. “She has acknowledged it.”

Ex-staffer says Benghazi panel is on partisan mission to destroy Hillary Clinton

The House Select Committee on Benghazi is reeling again after a fired GOP investigator accused the Republican majority of conducting a politically motivated probe of Hillary Clinton — accusations the right says are an attempt to get the committee to pay him a settlement.

Major Bradley Podliska, who left the panel in June after about 10 months on the job, told CNN on Sunday he was fired because he refused to conduct a partisan probe of the former secretary of state. He said the panel has veered off its original course to investigate the Sept. 11, 2012, attack that left four Americans dead — instead zeroing in on Clinton following news that she used private email while secretary of state.

Of course there was this last week , right?

Foolish McCarthy out after handing Clinton a get-out-of-Benghazi-free card

In some ideal, parallel universe, here’s what would happen to U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the idiotic California Republican who fulfilled Hillary Clinton’s wildest Benghazi fantasies:

He’d whisk himself away to a medieval island fortress prison off the coast of France.

And there, he would crouch upon the floor of his cell and voluntarily put his head into an iron mask, have it welded shut by some drooling jailer named Claude, and never be seen or heard from again.

Unfortunately, in the universe we’ve been condemned to endure, McCarthy had hoped to rehabilitate himself, clinging to his fevered dream of becoming speaker of the House of Representatives.

But now the plug has beenpulled on his dreams. Whether he did it or was told to do so by GOP establishment wise men, it really doesn’t matter. What he did was bad enough: Giving a fading Hillary Clinton — thought by most Americans to be untrustworthy or a liar — what she desperately needed: a get-out-of-Benghazi-free card…..

Hillary Clinton laments people STILL picking on her since the 1990’s…

Bill and Hillary Clinton go on the offense against the email thing….

A seemingly frustrated Hillary Clinton strove on Sunday to link the latest flap over her personal email server with the string of scandals and attacks Republicans raised against her in the 1990s.
“During the ’90s, I was subjected to the same kind of barrage,” the former first lady said on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” noting that New York voters elected her a senator despite the attacks.
Story Continued Below

“When I ran for the Senate, they overlooked all of that,” the former secretary of state and front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination continued. “I was elected senator after going through years of back and forth.”

After a series of questions from host Chuck Todd about her emails, including a new charge that a recently released email exchange with former CIA director and retired Gen. David Petraeus occurred earlier than she acknowledged using her personal account, an exasperated-sounding Clinton asked Todd whether his next question would be about “another conspiracy theory.”

Hillary says ‘Sorry’ on the private email server….

The ex-Sec of State finally gives people what they want….

Contrition on the email story…

She use of private email is exactly what other’s have done…

But her use of a private server….Which she no longer possesses…Was something that has hurt her, even though it was something she had done to protect her…

She has been slow to realize that she CANNOT afford to hang tough on this anymore…

Unlike in the 2008 race…She is bending…..Something is loath to do….

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said in an interview Tuesday that she was “sorry” for using a private email account while secretary of State.

“It was above board. But in retrospective, certainly, as I look back at it now — even though it was allowed — I should have used two accounts, one for personal, one for work-related emails,” Clinton told ABC News’s “David Muir” for the interview aired Tuesday evening.

“That was a mistake. I’m sorry about that. I take responsibility. And I’m trying to be as transparent as I possibly can to not only release 55,000 pages of my emails, turn over my server, but I am looking forward, finally, to testifying before Congress,” Clinton said.

“Did you make a mistake?” Muir asked again to clarify her use of the word.

“I did, I did. As I said, it was allowed, and there was no hiding it. It was totally above-board. Everybody in the government I communicated with — and that was a lot of people — knew I was using a personal email,” she said. “But I’m sorry that it has raised all of these questions. I do take responsibility for … what is clearly not the best decision.”

ABC News earlier Tuesday released an 8-second video clip of Clinton saying she made a “mistake” and was “sorry,” but it was unclear the question posed to her or the context of her remarks….

Political Roundup for September 4, 2015…Scott Walker vows to “Wreak Some Havoc!” in Washington…RRH Elections

President:

Hillary: The FBI has begun a probe in whether foreign intelligence services hacked into Hillary Clinton’s e-mail server during and after her tenure as secretary of state. The damage assessment will hunt for digital traces of cyber-espionage by foreign governments. Over 150 of the Clinton e-mails released so far contained classified information.  At least two e-mails found so far on the server contained “top secret” information. Several reports stated these two e-mails contained discussion of classified intelligence gleaned from spy satellites, some of the most sensitive information held by the US government.

Walker: Scott Walker vows to “Wreak Some Havoc!” in Washington. In a change of tactics the mild manner Governor who once called himself “aggressively normal” now wants to present himself to voters as a Trump like destroyer of norms.

Walker: Scott Walker’s unfortunate “Yeah” tic may be seriously hurting his presidential campaign. Walker tends to nod his head yes when being asked a question and the begins his response with the filler word “Yeah” in the same way other people might say um, listen or hmm. The tic makes Walker seem to be agreeing with things that he actually opposes.

Paul: A new Rand Paul smart phone app lets you take awful looking fake selfies with Senator Rand Paul.

Perry: Rick Perry now has no paid campaign staff in New Hampshire. His last paid adviser in NH has left his campaign.

Sanders: America’s loony left Socialist third party fringe splits over backing fellow third party Socialist Bernie Sanders for President. The Democratic Socialists of America,  Socialist Alternative and Communist Party of the United States support Sanders while the Trotskyite International Socialist Organization and the Revolutionary Communist Party does not.

Trump: The Washington Post takes an in depth look at Donald Trump’s well documented history of cheating at golf.

Maybe Hillary’s emails aren’t that bad for her after all?

So far the FBI is looking at who could have sent classified email’s TO HER….

There have been less than  100 files that have been classified SINCE they where discovered having gone thru the Sec of State’s email…

And there have been a LOT of emails that show Hillary Clinton as, well….A human being try to get thru her life with all the little problems that you and I have….Up to now?

Her main issue has been why didn’t she just get all the email stuff out in the open, which is something the Clinton’s instinctively do NOT do…

She NOW has her stuff now being released every month….

Showing the human side of Hillary Clinton, the women a lot of people don’t trust….

Are the Republican’s gonna regret all this email’s carrying on down the road?

Is it possible server-gate will achieve the opposite of what Republicans want and make Hillary Clinton seem more personable—and popular? So far, at least, the emails released this week seem to evoke less a Foggy Bottom Machiavelli at work than a fairly ordinary (if entitled) person, always in a hurry, who relies on her aides for just about everything.

In various emails Clinton wants to know the schedule not of Benghazi cover-up meetings but that of her favorite TV shows; rather than asking aides to stonewall Congress, she wants them to procure skim milk for her tea. (Oh, and “pls remtind [sic] me to bring more tea cups from home,” adds the most powerful diplomat in the United States.) Finally—in what must be an attempt to secretly exert her influence in Washington—Hillary Clinton orders that she and her staff stay home on snow days.

If Clinton’s long-running problem until now is that the public mistrusts her—and the revelations about her private email server have only exacerbated this mistrust—the emails themselves appear to leave the opposite impression. They are, for the most part, utterly mundane, the chatter of daily diplomatic life at a high stratum of society and, all in all, prosaic rather than pernicious. If there’s plotting going on, it isn’t happening here—either that or Hillary Clinton has developed a very clever code. Does “bring some skim milk” really mean “destroy the documents”?

To be sure, the Clinton camp would like nothing better than to convey the idea that the email trove not only exonerates her but makes her look likeable. (“What dark secrets are in Clinton’s emails? She works from home on snow days, for one,” tweeted the pro-Clinton Super PAC Correct the Record.)….

AP…Past State Dept. diplomats routinely sent classified emails unsecured…

But ONLY Hillary Clinton is getting grief, Right?

Hillary Clinton’s predecessors at the State Department “routinely” passed along secret information through unsecured email networks, according to an analysis by The Associated Press.

The news agency on Wednesday identified a number of cases in which diplomats’ emails were later classified for containing national security information, yet are available for the public to read through the State Department’s website.

Those cases are distinct from Clinton’s use of a personal server to run her own personal email address while in office as secretary of State. But they detail an environment in which it was not uncommon for top diplomats to transmit sensitive information over unsecured networks.
In one message from December of 2006, the AP reported, a diplomat appeared to have pasted into an email the text of a secret cable about China.

The AP found five emails dating to former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s time in office that have been largely censored for containing secrets….
