Breaking…A Washington Post report that Republican nominee Roy Moore had sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl in the 1970s

Ouch?

There goes a GOP US Senate seat?

Roy Moore, the controversial GOP nominee for a U.S. Senate seat in Alabama, had sexual contact with a 14-year-old in the 1970s, and pursued two other teenaged girls, according to a bombshell Washington Post report published early Thursday afternoon.

Leigh Corfman told the Post that she met Moore, then a 32-year-old district attorney, outside a courtroom in Etowah County, Alabama. Moore obtained her phone number, then made arrangements to pick her up near her house a few days later. She said that on a first date, he kissed her. On a second encounter, he took off her pants and shirt and his own clothes, touched her over her bra and underwear, and guided her hand to touch his penis over his underwear.

“I wasn’t ready for that….

“If these allegations are true, he must step aside,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement. A string of other Republican officeholders, including Cory Gardner, who leads the GOP’s Senate campaign, made similar statements.

  1. I believe he is toast when it comes to the U.S. Senate. Good Riddance. Even if he wins, he won’t get seated, unless it comes out very fast that all of this was totally made up, which is very doubtful. Then, there will be another special election. Just think though, had Doug Jones said a while back he would be willing to serve as an Independent, the GOP would be endorsing him now.

If this is all fake and Moore has nothing to hide, he simply needs to go in front of live tv cameras, his hand on a stack of Bibles, and a big Ten Commandments monument, hooked up to a lie detector test and swear to the Almighty that none of it happened. Very simple solution.

The good news for Roy Moore is that his chances of receiving a standing ovation at an upcoming Academy Awards ceremony have just increased exponentially, especially if he flees for France.

  2. CG you probably thought Trump was finished too after Access Hollywood. The Deplorables, which most Republicans are now simply don’t care. Sorry but I believed better of Republicans before I saw them line up en masse and still vote for Trump. Alabama Republicans will stick with Moore.

  3. It’s all locker room talk. To paraphrase Edwin Edwards, they could catch Roy Moore with a live girl (not his wife) or a dead boy with him naked in bed and those moron Republicans would still vote for him.

  4. There wasn’t anything Senate Republicans could have done to not seat Trump. They can not seat Moore. They want no part of him and we all know that Democrats very much want Moore to be a Senator for the fundraising opportunities.

Plus this sort of thing does not sit as well as supposed “locker room talk.” Nonetheless, it is only a matter of hours before the alt-right crowd screaming “fake news” will say, “well that was the Southern culture at the time. Plenty of couples met like that back then” or “well, he was a Democrat then.”

  5. Republicans backed down on Trump too. It was only the first weekend or so they talked tough, then they went back on their word and reendorsed him. Save a couple holdouts.

  6. I didn’t back down on Trump as you know, but one Senate seat is not the same as Hillary being President.

Even if he wins, they probably won’t seat him.

What does Trump say though? He’s the POS who was quoted saying to young teenage girls, “just think, in 10 years, I will be dating you.” I guess he was more patient than Moore as well as how he bragged about how awesome it was he could see underage girls naked backstage at his Miss Teen USA pageant.

  7. I’m a Democrat and I don’t want Roy Moore as Senator. In fact I donated to Jones so he could beat him. As has Keith, another Democrat. If Republicans are stupid enough to elect him than damn straight I want Democrats to make lemonade out of lemons but thats not the same as wanting Moore to be a Senator for fundraising purposes.

  8. It’s certainly possible that the Democrat wins this seat now and serves until 2021, as Moore is the type who is likely to stubborn to step down.

But it is also very possible that he wins anyway and then he just won’t get seated. The Governor immediately appoints a replacement to fill the vacancy (probably Strange, at Trump’s behest) and they hold another special election next year at the same time as all the other races there, when it was supposed to have originally be held.

And everything there this year will have been for naught.

So, Luther Strange is probably going to stop unpacking his office now.

  9. I was surprised to read today that Republican Governor Kay Ivey had refused to endorse Moore even before these accusations.Apparently(according to Political Wire) this has caused a rift in the Alabama Republican Party.

I find McConnells statement that Moore should step aside if these allegations are “true” interesting.

How exactly are they going to be proven ?

Does that mean that if not proven Moore should remain the candidate?

  10. They are all using the exact same language. There seems to be a belief that it’s going to be hard for him to deny it all.

AL Republicans control the whole state and should just change the law to replace him. It’s how Torricelli got taken care of in NJ.

  11. He’s already denied it .Whose “belief” are you referring to?The story is only a few hours old.

I’ll take my guidance from the Republican News Network.

Let’s see what Hannity ,Carlson and Ingraham say tonight.

  12. McConnell nor anyone else in the Senate that is a Republican wants Moore to join them. They will take any opportunity they can to stop it, if they can get away with it.

The story seems pretty legit though. People who watch Fox News hate Republican politicians though.

  13. I don’t see that as a given, particularly if the Right Wing media stand behind him.

I’m much more interested in how they react than McConnells pronouncements.

  14. The Republican State Auditor in Alabama defended Moore. Said its just like Joseph and Mary from the New Testament since he was an adult and she a teenager. Republicans these days. Sheesh.

  15. As I predicted, they are going to follow the lead of State Auditor Ziegler and say this is not a big deal, that it was a long time ago, and that older men dated younger girls quite frequently and Jesus and Mary had a big age difference, etc, etc.

So, it matters what the AL voters think mostly. I also know that if this were a Democrat politician, especially about something from 40 years ago, that the party stalwarts and talking heads would be making excuses for them too.

  16. I remember back in the P1 days when I said I found the 50 something Democrat Lt. Governor of KY dating a 19 year old “creepy”, people on the left said I was a prude and talked about how it’s not that uncommon and Jesus and Mary, etc.

Maybe being over 18 is the only thing that makes something “uncreepy” to some.

  17. Yeah but it’s not .

    It’s 2017.

And we are going to see what Alabama Republicans today are made of.Since they voted for this character begin with ,they are not going to give up on him easily.

    There are no certainties here.

And I see no reason ,as of this time ,to conclude that Senate Republicans would refuse to seat an elected Senator by the voters of Alabama.

    1. The line forms up ….

Four women say Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore pursued relationships with them when they were teens

Four women say that Alabama GOP Senate nominee Roy Moore pursued inappropriate relationships with them when they were teenagers, according to a report on Thursday.

Moore, now 70, is the state’s former chief justice who was twice removed from his duties for defying federal courts over same-sex marriage and the public display of the Ten Commandments.

One woman told the Washington Post that she was 14 when Moore, then 32, initiated a sexual relationship in 1979.

Moore was an assistant district attorney at the time….

Roy Moore is fundraising off of a story alleging he sexually abused a girl.

            ….

“The forces of evil will lie, cheat, steal — even inflict physical harm — if they believe it will silence and shut up Christian conservatives like you and me,” Moore continued in the email. “Their goal is to frustrate and slow down our campaign’s progress to help the Obama-Clinton Machine silence our conservative message. That’s why I must be able to count on the help of God-fearing conservatives like you to stand with me at this critical moment.”

The email then asks for an “emergency contribution” to Moore’s campaign.

Moore goes on to say he’s “planning to slug it out with the Obama-Clinton Machine with everything I’ve got over the next four weeks before the December 12 Special Election…

Alabama Covington County GOP Chairman William Blocker tells me Democrats convinced these women to tell a fake story to damage Moore.

I told him the 14-year-old became a Trump voter.

“That’s the typical background or profile of somebody they would be using for that,” he said.

  18. Southern Republicans are scrum. CG is naive.
They’d have some choice words for him for daring to oppose Trump and Moore. Because he’s from Chicago.. And other things

Trump pretended at one point that he was going to sue his accusers for libeling him. Now he’s dropped the pretense. But congressional GOP has agreed to keep pretending they think the women were lying.

  19. Right wing sites are all saying its fake news .CG doesn’t grasp how horrible the monster he helped build is. They’d have plenty of names for him I am sure.

He doesn’t realize his party is gone. They’d rather stand up for the KKK than someone like him.

  20. In Corey’s 4:21, I would find a 50 year old dating a 19 year old as “unusual” and most likely “ill-advised”, but no, I wouldn’t vote against someone just for that.

The reality is that as most of us get older, we remain attracted to women in that age group. So while most of us would not marry them or date them, I assume that many of us can at least imagine a situation where under the right circumstances, we could fall in love with a 19 year old.

While I do support the concept of age of consent laws, I think the existing age of consent laws are more rigid than they should be. But yes, I still do see this as a completely different issue than a 32 year old touching the breasts of a 16 year old against her will.

  21. I only vaguely remember the Kentucky Democrat who dated a 19 yr old. I think its creepy but its on a different plane than a 32 yr old taking a 14 yr old into the woods and taking her clothes off. Alabama Republicans seem to be cool with it. If it were a 14 yr old boy I’m pretty sure they’d feel different.

  22. CG ocassionally acknowledges that today’s Republican Party isn’t very welcoming to him anymore.

However, he retains the belief, more like a hope, that the old party will return.

Thus, he has the sort of contradictory position of hoping the current Trump dominated Republican Party goes away(he seems to believe that if Trump would only exit the scene everything would return to normal) ,while also hoping for that same party’s electoral success which simple logic would dictate that such would embolden that party’s leader,Donald Trump.

  23. I didn’t see Hannity but from what I read he dismissed the allegations against Moore on his show last night saying they were consensual. So I guess he’s in favor of NAMBLA now?

  24. i’m not sure the GOP was ever quite like CG imagined it. It confounds me that kneeling for the national anthem can be unpatriotic, but retaining confederate memorials of some truly despicable people is not. Jefferson Davis went ho his deathbed believing it was God’s will for blacks to be slaves.

    1. The age thing between people over the age of say 18/21 really is between them….

The Moore allegation is about a 14 year old….

  25. Perhaps the Alabama Republicans should take their lead from this Hollywood elites they love to hate and fire Moore.

What would the Republicans do without Hollywood elites to beat up on? And without Hollywood, where would the Republicans get their porn?

The Republicans in Alabama are actually saying, if the charges against Moore are true they will still vote for him. At least they are honest in a very strange perverse sort of way. Sort of like voting for Alan Keyes even though you know he is a religious homophobic nut case. Party tribalism comes first.

    1. Well…. I think from what I’m seeing in the media Keith?

They will vote for him NO MATTER WHAT….

The goal is to win the seat…Period…

Maybe Strange will mount a write in run?

  26. I read somewhere yesterday that Strange wouldn’t be eligible. Maybe a sore loser law where you can’t run in the general if you lose the primary?

I agree with Zreebs that a coordinated write in campaign would probably just make a Jones victory much more likely.

  27. Strange actually wrote the “sore loser” opinion for the State of Alabama.

You cannot make this stuff up.

The Republicans are now saying the Post paid the women to make these allegations.

  28. Right wing sites I’ve seen now say the 14 yr old girl should have known better and it was consensual. Pointing out to these knuckle draggers that under the age of consent=non consensual is probably a waste of time.

  29. Did Strange write the sore loser law because he expected to win the primary and was afraid Moore would run as a 3rd party candidate? (Note to CG, this is a question, not a statement)

  30. I just looked up NAMbLA (North America Man boy Love Association) on Wikipedia. In the logo of that group, the M is capitalized and the b is not – predumably to reflect the power of the man relative to the boy. It looks like police are trying to infiltrate that group – as they should.

  31. Even if there is a concerted write in campaign by Strange or another prominent Alabama Republican,I don’t think that Jones has a very good chance of victory.

Indeed, he might stand a better chance by staying head to head against Moore.

The base statewide Democratic Vote is about 35%.Jones has been polling in the low 40s ,reflecting that base and a small number of Republicans and “independents”(in southern states that term often refers to people who generally vote Republican , but for a variety of reasons don’t want to call themselves such) who can’t stomach Moore.

With another Republican in the mix ,that latter Jones vote might very well go to the write in ,while drawing away disenchanted Moore voters who might have held their noses and voted for a Democrat absent an alternative.

In such a three way race, Jones likely vote would be in the 35-37% range.I could easily see Moore still winning with a total in the low 40s and the rest going to the write in .

Alabama is a really very red state and the voters there are pretty much committed Republicans.

  32. The obvious assumption in your analysis, Jack, is that Strange voters would be more likely to vote for Jones than Moore. I don’t buy that. Strange’s political positions are very close to Moore’s.

Let me put it this way. Would CG vote for Jones over Moore? Probably not, but he might vote for Strange over Moore.

  33. So?

My point is that with another Republican in the race, whatever Republican Vote Jones was going to get,he won’t,leaving him essentially with around 35% or so,the Democratic base.

Can I see either Moore or Strange ,for example ,getting more than 35%?

    Sure.

  34. I said a long time ago that I would vote for Jones over Moore.

I also said that I would probably theoretically write someone in or even possibly vote for Jones rather than vote for Strange or Brooks in a general election because of the Trump factor.

However, if there was a serious write in effort on behalf of a Republican I liked, such as Martha Roby, then I would certainly go that route rather than voting for Jones.

  35. It’s hard to see Moore heeding the call of national Republicans to abandon the race.

I mean look at the guys record. He seems to relish controversies, basically gave up his judicial position rather than back down.

  36. I would’ve supported Strange in the primary, but would vote for Moore. If he did commit those acts 40 years ago, God has forgiven him for them long ago. He’ll be a solid conservative vote in the senate. I’d prefer someone a little less outlandish, but he may wind up being a good senator.

  37. I’ve caught some grief here occasionally for pointing out the role of “ hate” in today’s Republican Party.

Hell,I’m a mere piker compared to recently become ex Republican never Trumper and foreign policy maven Max Boot.

Today he called the Republicans “ complicit in evil” and said the party doesn’t even deserve to survive !

    That’s pretty tough

  38. I can’t say that I understand Republicans, so I am genuinely interested in understanding Republican’s 5:07 more . If you are comfortable, I would appreciate RepubliCAN’s response to the below:

    1) If Moore did what he is accused of, should he apologize to the girl?
    2) How do you know God forgave Moore?
    3) As a conservative Republican, do you support more lenient punishment for sexual assault on children?
    4) If God is willing to forgive ex-convicts, should they also have the right to vote? (If not, explain how you think someone is qualified to be a senator, but others who paid their price to society for doing something you acknowledged Moore might have done should not even be able to vote?)

    1. Roy Moore: ‘These allegations are completely false’

Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore said Friday that the allegations regarding his sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old girl in 1979 are “completely false.”

“These allegations are completely false and misleading,” he told Sean Hannity on his radio show….

  39. In an interview this afternoon Moore didn’t deny that he dated 16 yr olds when he was in his early 30s but said he doesn’t recall dating any girls “without the permission of her mother”

    Gross

  40. Zreebs,

1,3: No one is advocating more leniency for horrible crimes. Under our laws, Moore is innocent until proven guilty. If he did commit the sins, under the eyes of God he is innocent as he has been forgiven.

    2. Because I am a Christian, and I believe that Roy Moore is a devout Christian (unlike trump or Clinton) who asked for forgiveness IF HE DID COMMIT THE ACTS. .

    4. To quote the Bible, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” You should try reading that book sometime! If he was convicted, the law is the law, though in God’s eyes he’s innocent. He hasn’t been convicted though.

It bears repeating that I’m not a fan of Moore, but I still prefer him to the other candidate for the Senate.

  41. If Moore wants forgiveness and redemption, shouldn’t he admit to what happened? He’s giving disastrous interviews today in which he cannot keep his story straight and saying that if it was true, any such person would be unfit. So, he can’t have it both ways.

Also, someone can be forgiven and redeemed but still not entitled to be in the U.S. Senate.

  42. This would be so simple for a granstander like Moore to deal with if he had nothing to hide…

Go on tv with a stack of Bibles and the largest Ten Commandments display he can find and say the allegations made by the woman who claimed to have been 14 at the time is untrue. If he did it with a polygraph, and passed, it would be even more powerful, but it speaks volumes that Moore is unwilling to swear before the Almighty that he is innocent.

He’s a moral disgrace and so is any Democrat who did anything similar to this at any point in their life.

  43. The only Democrat I can think of recently charged with sexual deviancy with a minor is Anthony Weiner. He’s in prison now.

  44. Well now let me say that in this whole country?

Yes ,there are people who have voted Democratic ,that have committed acts similiar to the likely future Republican Senator from Alabama.

We know not who they are or where they are ,but , undoubtedly ,they are out there and there are Republicans besides Moore similarly situated.

And what does any of that have to do with this political story?

    Absolutely Nothing.

  45. He should come clean about it and let the voters decide. If he’s contradicting himself, he deserves the political consequences. In my opinion, he is qualified for the senate and I would vote for him. I wish we had Strange in there instead though.

    1. Two GOP senators withdraw Roy Moore endorsements after sexual misconduct allegations

Two Republican senators have unendorsed Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore (R) following reported allegations of sexual misconduct against him.

  46. Thanks RepubliCAN,

I actually did try to read the Bible once. I might have gotten to page 3 before I got completely bored and felt that I was wasting my time. Once about 20 years ago I agreed to go to a conservative Christian Church in exchange for a conservative Christian friend coming to my church. It was actually a good experience for me, although my friend would not say the same. With that said, it didn’t change any of my perceptions about conservative Christians.

In response to your comments, assuming he was guilty, in my value system, Moore Should ask forgiveness from the person he sexually assaulted. That seems obvious to me. Asking for forgiveness from God seems pathetically easy and morally grossly inadequate. I would tend to agree with you that Moore probably is a devout Christian, but that doesn’t mean he is not a total slimeball. It is my belief that Some conservative Christians at their core are good people, but of course that is not always true.
