House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) will not run for reelection in 2018, he announced on Facebook Wednesday.

“After long consultation with my family and prayerful consideration, I have decided I will not be a candidate for any office in 2018,” he wrote. “I have made a personal decision to return to the private sector.”

  1. I don’t know why he is leaving but since he is, why open your mouth about Trump?

    Just leave.

  2. I agree Zreebs, Trey has already been caught manipulating evidence. Jason at least has a hometown paper that will call him out on things. No brakes on Trey.

    1. Senior House Republicans want him to give up the Oversight chairmanship well before he resigns from Congress.

A handful of top Republicans have a message for outgoing Rep. Jason Chaffetz: It’s time to relinquish the House Oversight Committee gavel.

Several senior GOP lawmakers are quietly encouraging Chaffetz to step down from his chairmanship soon, even though the Utah Republican doesn’t plan to resign from Congress until June 30. While his retirement announcement Thursday said nothing about his future work, Chaffetz has told lawmakers he’ll be heading to Fox News….

Rep. Trey Gowdy, who previously ran the House Select Committee on Benghazi, is expected to take the reins of the Oversight Committee and is already making his case to Steering panel members. GOP insiders say the South Carolina Republican has the position locked up….

  3. Evan McMullen and Josh Romney appear to be running for Governor. I wonder if this opening could possibly change that dynamic? I haven’t read anything on who Utah Governor Gary Herbert might like for that district.

I doubt Mitt Romney would be interested because it appears he has a Senate seat if he wants it. Last we heard from CG’s hero, he was praising Trump for his good start. Maybe Mitt is still pining for a federal appointment?

  4. You say Jason Chaffetz won’t be missed? Be careful what you ask for. I would definitely be inclined to prefer him over Trey Gowdy. I ask Jack and Keith for their valued thoughts.

  5. Chaffetz was pushing back on the report that he is leaving immediately and saying that it could be months from now and that there absolutely nothing about to break. Initially, it seemed like he was just laying the groundwork to run for Governor in 2020, but maybe he’s going to join the private sector.

        1. He won’t be missed….

  6. I wouldn’t be surprised if CG is right and a shoe is about to drop on this prick.

But he’s probably just cashing out.

  7. Can Mitt get his act together quickly or will Evan beat him to it?

I suspect lots of Republican retirements coming up before the end of the year.

  8. He’s expected to resign tomorrow now. Either he has a really lucrative job he is about to begin or something very bad is going to be coming out.

    1. Wow!….

The guy is looking to book right away?
