Americas Bitter Pill:Money, Politics, Backroom Deals, and the Fight to Fix Our Broken Healthcare System…Book Review

Veteran journalist Steven Brill has penned the basic history of Obamacare and the past, present and future of the American healthcare system in his latest work.Brill shows how our unique health insurance system(where employers provide workers insurance) was an outgrowth of labor union collective bargaining back in the forties and fifties. He speculates that ,but for this, we likely would have a health system much closer to most of the western democracies.

Contrary to Republican claims,Brill intricately shows that Obamacare is nothing more than Romneycare on a national level and that the hated(by Republicans) “mandate” was the idea of the Right Wing Heritage Foundation.Except for that and a few others references to Republican intransigence the GOP plays little role in this story .

Instead Brill concentrates on the maneuvuring done to get ACA adopted and the corners cut( many of which later came back to bite Obamacare supporters).Hes not as hard on insurance companies as one might think he would be ,finding medical suppliers, hospitals and drug makers much more responsible for the crisis in healtcare and the outrageous profiteering rampant in the field.

Alternately praising and harshly critical of Obama,he is unsparing in his criticism of the rollout and feels that the disaster that it turned into could have been easily avoided through better organization.Essentially no one was in charge and it showed.

He feels that Obamacare will never be as sacrosanct as Social Security and Medicare due to the fact that it only impacts about 25% of the population and that, indeed, it will remain unpopular as employers will continue to blame it (wrongly) for increasing premiums which he sees no end to as long as our healthcare system remains “broken.”

In his view, Obamacare is a good thing, but the problem of skyrocketing health costs will continue to plague the country for the foreseeable future.
