POLITICO’s Ginger Gibson reports from Wisconsin:

Mitt Romney made clear he believes the general election has begun, delivering a speech in Appleton, Wisconsin that dealt little with the primary contest and overwhelmingly focused on President Obama.

Romney focused not only on the economy, but on what he called “Barack Obama’s Government-Centered Society,” stopping just short of calling it socialism.

“One must ask whether we will still be a free enterprise nation and whether we will still have economic freedom,” Romney said. “America is on the cusp of having a government-run economy. President Obama is transforming America into something very different than the land of the free and the land of opportunity.”

Romney detailed his start in the business world, explaining first that his grandfather had worked in construction and his father rise to the head of an auto company and later governor of Michigan.

He juxtaposed his business background to Obama’s record on the economy, which he said slowed the economic recovery.

“I don’t want to transform America. I want to restore the values of economic freedom, opportunity, and small government that have made this nation the leader it is,” Romney said, garnering his first round of applause more than halfway through his speech in front of the crowd of students and supporters at Lawrence University.
