Santorum and Gingrich will receive Secret Service Protection….

Mitt Romney and his detail….Photo….thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com

Rick Santorum’s campaign asked for the Secret Service  protection last week…

Newt Gingrich’s campaign just put in the request which goes thru the Service to it’s boss Homeland Security to the White House and

The Congress which will authorize the request in providing details…

Herman Cain had a Secret Service protective detail for brief time early in the 2012 GOP campaign …..

Protective details mean 24/7 Secret Service protection…..

The Service will request local and state police escorts…

The campaign will have to provide support for travel by the detail’s which shadow their protectee…..

That means motorcades, rope lines, security checks and less access to the candidates….

And yes street closures and people screening at events……

The cost of this protection is paid by the US taxpayer….

Reid Cherlin, who is covering the Republican primaries for GQ magazine and worked on President Obama’s first campaign and in his White House, said that having a Secret Service detail “complicates things” for everyone involved.

“Especially in retail-focused states, all of a sudden roads are closed, there are traffic jams, people can’t get close to the candidate, the local press feels mishandled,” he said. “So there you are cruising down a two-lane blacktop in a tiny town at 80 miles per hour in these black S.U.V.’s. It can be a fun spectacle in a bigger city, but in tiny towns where people want to meet the candidate, it can be a problem.”

“It can create sort of a P.R. challenge,” he added.

Grandmothers who simply want their books signed might be accidentally jostled, and local donors cannot always be taken backstage to meet the candidate. People will have to be screened — often passing through a metal detector — to enter campaign events, creating yet another layer of hassle and frustration for potential supporters along with enhanced safety and isolation for the candidate. (Being glitter-bombed — protesters showered Mr. Romney with cans full of glitter as he took the stage in Minnesota on Wednesday — might not have happened with the Secret Service on the job.)
