People celebrate passage of the New York State gay marriage bill at Stonewall in Greenwich Village Friday.

New York joins other states is bringing marraige equality to gays…

Senators passed the bill 33 to 29 as the normally somnolent chambers erupted in a raucous chant of “USA! USA!”
“As I have said many times, this is a very difficult issue and it will be a vote of conscience for every member of the Senate,” said GOP Majority Leader Dean Skelos (R-Nassau).

New York joined ConnecticutMassachusettsVermontNew HampshireIowa and Washington, D.C., in legally recognizing gay marriage.

“I’m verklempt,” said a nervously optimistic Assemblyman Matthew Titone (D-S.I), one of five openly gay state lawmakers prior to the vote. “I’m still in a state of disbelief.”

The Assembly passed the bill last week for the fourth time since 2007.

It was only two years ago that gay marriage was easily defeated in the then Democrat-controlled Senate. Now, the rush to the altar could begin 30 days after Gov. Cuomo, who made gay marriage a priority, signs the bill.

For gay couples, marriage means more than just swapping rings…….

  1. Isn’t it interesting that marriage for gay people is almost exclusively in New England and New York – which are The most Catholic areas in the country? It is hard for me to imagine that the relatively liberal church I grew up in in the 60s and 70s is now arguably the biggest opponent of marriage equality.

  2. Oddly this might temporarily help Bachmann

Seeing all these pictures of Gay couples

REALLY drives the Right Wing homophobes

    Crazy!

  3. True that!

But even though the last few years saw a few roll back of that gay marriage right….
The country is moving in that direction…..
Incidently I did a post about two weeks back on DADT …..
It still has NOT been put fully into effect….
The military has NOT notified the Congress and President that they are ready….
It will be on Panetta’s watch …..
    NOT Gates….
    If and when done…

  4. New York governor signs law approving gay marriage

ALBANY, New York (Reuters) – Governor Andrew Cuomo made same-sex marriages legal in New York on Friday, a key victory for gay rights ahead of the 2012 presidential and congressional elections.

New York will become the sixth and most populous U.S. state to allow gay marriage. State senators voted 33-29 on Friday evening to approve marriage equality legislation and Cuomo, a Democrat who had introduced the measure, signed it into law….

  5. I think that the Roman Catholic Church’s political influence, for good or for ill, has waned, while that of the evangelicals, although not so strong as in the 1920′s, has increased. Mormons used to be of little political consequence outside Utah and some neighboring states, but they were a significant component of the coalition that passed Proposition 8 in California.

And you can’t count the Catholic Church out yet. In Rhode Island, they were able to exert enough influence in the State Senate to persuade the House not to pursue gay marriage, but in the last week of the session even civil unions seem stalled. Traditional Catholics must have been a significant part of the coalition that got the voters to repeal marriage equality in Maine.

  6. I support excommunication of Cuomo and any Catholic politicans who voted for this. Cardinal Dolan must show courage.

  7. Why make this an issue for denying the sacraments? While I’d strongly disagree (and am not a Christian), I could see something like abortion, euthanasia, the death penalty — even war & peace or civil rights — being cause for excommunication, but gender-neutral civil (not religious) marriage is not a life and death issue in the way other questions are.

About twenty years ago, Margaret Thatcher’s Lord Chancellor, Lord Mackay of Clashfern, was forced out of the (very wee) Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland because he’d attended the funeral services of Sir John Biggs-Davidson, a Conservative Unionist from Northern Ireland who was also a Roman Catholic. Lord Mackay stood his ground and left the church.

  8. The Church is still rich…..

  9. I don’t dislike gay people that not the issue the issue is traditional values which have been spit on since the late 60′s. Look I want our society to return to the social values that prevailed before then. We were a stronger society then.

  10. Well I have more news for ya Brandon, Buddy…..

Andrew Cuomo by my estimation is gonna have to marry his live in girlfriend Sarah Lee (Food Network)…..
You do know he divorced a Kennedy?

He’ll have to do that because I do believe he’s already running for President in 2016….
The church is gonna have to punt on this guy if they think he has a decent chance to be the Democratic nominee…..

  11. DSD,
My British born Great Grandmother believed that Roy Jenkins and Harold Wilson ruined Britain with the Permissive Society.

  12. as a non practicing anything (grew up being taken to the Methodist Church) who says his prayers everyday….and believes…..I agree with ya DSD……

  13. james b,
They should stand up to him they didn’t with his father and they should have. I don’t want him representing my faith he isn’t apart of it and neither was his abortion loving father.

  14. Brndon …try to stay away from……”I don’t like ……people”……It’s a generalization that won’t make you look good….

There are gay people you know and don’t know…..

    Some you like….
    Some you don’t…..

    On the society thing….
    Things change….

  15. We little people just motor on…..

    The society makes itself…..

    We’re just passengers….

  16. Moral truths never change they are always the same! It is society that is the problem and we must take it back!

  17. Brandon…..

His polling numbers have been 60%+ for the past two years…..
    He’s only been Governor for 5 months…..
He knows social right leaners ain’t gonna be his voters no matter what…..

  18. John Kerry had to undergo all sorts of grief after his former wife (before Teresa Heinz) claimed that she had been bullied into not opposing an annulment of their Catholic marriage. An annulment differs from divorce (which Jesus condemns in the Sermon on the Mount, <Matthew 5:31-32; cf Secs 1648-51 and 2382-86 of The Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2nd ed., 1997) in that the Church declares that the parties had never been validly married.

  19. And Mario Cuomo…was…and IS a Democratic icon……
And could have run for President….
    They all waited for him….
And he’s every bit as Catholic as his son is…..

  20. DSD…..I’d agree were your going…..

A Catholic President (We’ve had one already folks)……
Means we get the church as part of the deal…..

    Religion, eh?
    Obama
    Romney

  21. James, I’m pretty sure Brandon was saying that he did NOT dislike gay people; it was a principle, policy, trend or idea that he disliked.

  22. I wasn’t putting him down DSD…..

But like the….” my best friend is black”…thing….

My point was there are gays we like….don’t like….they should be judged as indidividuals I believe…..

We need to get away from the broad stroke labels….

I lean democratic but I damn sure do have things against some Dem’s….

  23. and Brandon you say what you like……….

I’m just putting my 2 cents out there…..

    thanks DSD

  24. DSD is right I don’t like many things about modern society. I also don’t like the rich getting richer either so it’s tough for me with politics.

  25. Brandon I started from where you are….

    I bitched about everything that ain’t right…

    I still do…

But after a few decades of watching this shit…..

you get to the point where you kinda realize that since the Roman’s….
    The rich get their’s…
    No matter what….

    Like someone said here…
Maybe the poor GOper’s go along with their rich GOPer’s because they have tricked themselves into believing that they’ll be rich one day?
    I guess in a way I’m tired…..

Me and Jack do our thing because I’m out there saying ….’it ain’t gonna happen’….
    But Jack’s right to a degree….
Because you never quite know what’s actually gonna happen….

    I like politics because it’s a guessing game….
And I always get a kick out of when I guess right……

  26. the ironic thing is Brandon…

as soon as the poor people get rich……
they tend to forget they were poor….

    let me state this…
that DOES NOT apply to all of them…..

  27. james b you are so right people forget where they come from.

  28. The most difficult (although not the most scandalous) thing that’s been noted for generations of American history is the tendency of each immigrant wave, out of fear of losing what they’ve achieved by great struggle, to want to drop the portcullis and pull up the drawbridge against the next wave.

  29. ain’t that a bitch Brandon?

  30. ain’t that the truth DSD?……

we ALL came from somewhere else…..
People tend to forget that right quick……..

  31. Brandon, Should the Catholic church deny the sacraments to a married woman who engages in birth control or to someone who has engaged in premarital sex?

  32. DSD, I agree that the Catholic Church still has a lot of political influence with it’s members. I see several of people in my family who attend Church weekly are very opposed to abortion even though all are stronger Democrats than me. I don ‘t believe these good people would oppose abortion if they didn’t hear weekly condemnations from the Church.

  33. Brandon didn’t answer you?

  34. believe…say my prayers….have a conversation somettimes….BUT….

    follow my own consul……

We’re ALL human with our own biases…..beliefs……and needs……

    I’ll find my own way…..

  35. I just sent this a half hour ago. He’ll probably respond.

  36. interesting…..I was outside in my baccl yard on this laptop when an ant crawled into the computer…..

    he hasn’t come out!

  37. The original computer bug was just that: an insect that had crawled into one of the earliest gargantuan vacuum-tube and copper-wire mainframes and short circuited something.

  38. Zreebs,
    No I would not.

  39. I can relate to that DSD….He, he, he…..The little bugger!

  40. So Brandon – You didn’t explain your position. why excommunicate politicians who support full equal rights for lesbian/gay people, but not excommunicate people who actually break the church teachings? The politician isn’t even saying whether it is morally okay to have gay sex – just saying that the person shouldn’t be treated differently by the law.

You seem to imply That is kind of like excommunicating a politician who votes that it should not be a crime to have premarital sex, but not excommunicate someone who actuallyhas the premarital sex. Seems extremely unfair tome. Almost evil.

should a politician who votes for the death penalty be excluded from excommunication? or just politicians who vote for equal rights for gay people?
